December 30: Gift
This month, gift-giving and gifts can seem inescapable. What’s the most memorable gift, tangible or emotional, you received this year?
Dice was my greatest tangible gift this year. No question. But I’ve already written enough about him.
A gift that I gave myself this year was the time to take some classes. I took a photography class, a basic cooking class and a baking class. Each was wonderful, but especially the photography class.
In school I never had time to study photography. I realized it was a valuable skill in the graphic design world, but because I was so focused on graduating in 4 years, I didn’t prioritize it. This is the only thing I regret about my college career.
I started cooking and posting recipes on my blog and became so frustrated at how my photos turned out. So I took the plunge and bought an SLR on Craigslist. A couple months later I signed up for a photography course at Samy’s Camera. My instructor was fabulous and I learned the basics of photography and how to use my camera in 5 short weeks. The artistic stuff (composition, color, etc.) came easy because of my art background.
I don’t practice as much as I should, but already I notice a huge difference in the quality of my photographs. I can get the image in my mind on the screen now and it’s a great feeling. M bought me some new camera equipment this year for my birthday/Christmas and I can’t wait to try it out!
I’m so glad I spent the time and money to invest in this lifelong hobby. And who knows, it might be more than that some day!
