If you want to take the chilly edge off of your swimming pool without paying thousands for a pool heater, then there’s no better option than a solar pool cover.
Do Solar Covers Work?
These covers are a fraction of the cost of a pool heater and can help to reduce pool heat loss by up to 70%, you’ll likely see a 10-degree increase in pool temperature in just one day.
Do These Covers Work With A Pool Heater?
If you own a pool heater, you’ll know the steep expense of heating a whole pool, let alone the time it takes to actually warm up (between 24 – 72 hours).
If you apply a solar pool cover you will not only heat your pool at a far quicker rate, you will also save lots of money, with solar covers reducing heat loss by 70% while helping your pool to stay the same temperature throughout the day.
Which Solar Cover Is The Highest Rated?
So, I’ve taken time to find the best all-around covers and I’ve listed them all below, however, here’s the pool cover I feel is superior to the rest…
#1 – The Sun2Solar Pool Cover (Best Solar Cover)
The Sun2Solar cover is by far the best solar swimming pool cover we’ve seen.
It has over 640 reviews, with a 5 out of 5 rating and it’s not hard to see why.
The price starts at $26 and goes all the way up to $215 with sizes available at even 33ft by 33ft, which in pool terms is MASSIVE.
It comes in three different colors with my favorite choice being the simple blue.
Let’s get down to the real meat of this cover.
- It is designed to prevent up to 90% of water evaporation, no matter the weather or time of day.
- It’s designed from the best material I’ve seen from any solar cover.
- The design makes it easy to cut to the size of your pool.
- It stops you losing the warmth generated in the sun in the night, so you can wake up and take a nice swim in the morning without feeling like you’ve developed icicles on your nose.
- It has hundreds of people who have seen a 10-degree increase in heat just using this cover. You usually wouldn’t see this kind of temperature change without an expensive heater and a big utility bill.
- It protects your pool from leaves and other debris very well.
- Comes in almost every pool size you could imagine.
- Comes with a massive 6-year warranty that you can use if you ever have any wear and tear.
- You will save lots of money on pool chemicals, as these solar covers help keep the pool nice and clean.
As you can probably see this is definitely one of the best-valued solar covers you’ll find, but here’s what some people on Amazon have been saying about it…
…Amazon Reviews Of This Solar Cover:
These are just two reviews, but there are hundreds of 5-star reviews saying the exact same thing.
If you’re looking to buy one of these pool heating covers then I’d look no further than the Sun2Solar cover.
Intex Solar Cover
Second on the list is the Intex solar cover the best above ground pool solar cover I’ve seen.
The Intex solar blanket is ideal for above ground pools due to its round shape, now I’ve seen many people use these circles inside weirdly shaped in-ground pools, however, I feel it works flawlessly with above ground and the Sun2Solar above is better for in-ground.
Now, this solar blanket starts at a small $18 and goes all the way up to $39, it reduces evaporation by up to 95%, while retaining heat, making it easy to use your pool all day/night long.
It has a fantastic 2000 + reviews on Amazon with over 4 out of 5 in rating.
The price, mixed with the fact it’s a quality product makes this cover a no-brainer for owners of an above ground pool.
- Perfect for all above ground pools.
- Easy to store away and even comes with its own storage bag.
- Amazing material, that will last you throughout the year.
- 2000 + reviews with over a 4 out of 5 rating.
- Prices start as low as $18 and go up to $39 for a massive 18ft pool.
This is for above-ground pool owners if you own an above ground pool and want to maintain heat and add over 10 degrees to your overall pool temperature this is the blanket to use.
Thermo-Tex Solar Cover
The Thermo- Tex Cover is another fantastic cover, it’s not as good (my opinion) as the Sun2Solar, but it’s definitely a great way to cut heating costs while extending your swimming season.
Now the thermo-tex cover really shines in a few areas, it’s lightweight, making it really easy to move on and off the pool, it has a 3 year warranty, which is really good as these covers can sometimes come under some wear and tear (especially in off season), it’s also UV stabilised, stopping any chemicals leaking into your pool.
As you can see this cover is actually a great choice, the only downside is that it only has 10 reviews (all 5 out of 5) and doesn’t come in anywhere near as many sizes as the Sun2Solar.
- It comes with a 3-year warranty
- It’s lightweight making it easy to get on and off the pool.
- It’s made with great material and it’s UV stabilized making it safe at stopping chemicals leaking into your pool.
- It doesn’t come in as many sizes.
- Low amount of reviews.
- Not as good as the Sun2Solar.
Blue Wave Solar Blanket
Now the Blue Wave Solar Blanket is another pool cover you can trust.
It has over 300 reviews and is over 4 out of 5 in rating, with a majority of the negative reviews being down to people picking the wrong size for their pool.
It comes with an unreal 6-year warranty, which will cover your investment for many swimming seasons to come.
It comes in multiple sizes and the only place it loses to the Sun2Solar is the price, it’s a little high-end, with the cheapest price being $101 and the most expensive being $300 for a 30ft x 50ft size blanket.
The price does come with some benefits, it’s made with a really great material that can take a lot more wear and tear than some pool blankets.
It’s a clear blanket which allows for more sun rays to reach your pool, this also helps heat things up quicker.
- It will take the chilling gasp you have while getting into your pool away.
- It’s made of top-notch material
- It’s lightweight and easy to get out the pool.
- It comes with a 6-year warranty that’s easy to use in case of wear and tear over the years.
- It protects your pool from unwanted leafs and debris.
- The cover is made with 14-gauge material, this makes it extremely durable, even in bad weather.
- The price is much higher than some of the others on the list.
Splash Pools Oval Solar Cover
The Splash pool cover is something worth saving till the end.
It’s an all-around great pool blanket and can increase the temperature of your pool by up to 15°.
It has over 100 reviews and still a strong 4 out of 5 review score.
It’s long lasting and will easily last 2 – 3 years if kept correctly.
- It’s made of good material
- It has over 100 reviews with a 4 out of 5-star rating.
- It can increase your pool up to 15 degrees.
- It doesn’t come in many sizes.
The Answers To Your Pool Heating Questions
I love answering questions about anything swimming related, so if you have any questions you can use the comments below.
On another note, I’ve done my best to answer any of the questions you may have about keeping your pool warm with one of these covers.
Advantages Of Using A Solar Pool Cover
If you own a pool in a cold-mild climate, that doesn’t get a lot of sun, or even if you just find it hard to get in during the morning and evening, a solar pool cover is for you.
It usually takes about 24 hours to heat the pool up around 10 degrees, but the real magic is that it helps the pool to stay warm throughout the night, making the temperature stay around the same as it was in the day.
A solar blanket also lowers water evaporation by 95% lowering the amount of water your pool loses to climate.
How To Use Your Product Correctly
Using a pool cover is easy, all you need to do is lay it on your swimming pool, however, there are a few things to keep in mind.
Your cover should be in the pool anytime you’re not swimming to ensure your pool gains all the benefits of this product.
Furthermore, you should make sure the cover correctly fits your pool, this is achieved by shaping the pool cover with a sharp pair of scissors.
You’ll also want to make sure the bubbles are facing downwards.
What To Avoid With Solar Pool Covers
The ones above are all quality products that have been tested by loads of people and have amazing reviews, however not all pool covers are that lucky.
Some are made with cheap materials and break within weeks of use, you’ll also find that price doesn’t really matter.
I’ve seen $400 solar blankets that break within months and $40 ones that have made it through all 4 seasons, I find you’ve got to go on reviews and word of mouth less than visuals and price.
Is It Better To Get A Pool Heater?
The average pool heater costs around 1 – 3 thousand dollars, these cost around 80 bucks, of course, a pool heater is better but is the difference worth the cost, NOPE.
If you live in a cold place, want to use your pool all year round or have an indoor pool, then I’d recommend a pool heater with a solar cover, it’ll help you maintain heat and save a huge amount of money in running costs.
Pool heaters and solar covers go hand and hand with each other, so if having a hot pool is everything to you then try both.
A pool heater we recommend is the Hayward H150FDN Pool heater it’s a reasonable price, on the cheaper end of running costs and when paired with one of these covers will keep your pool nice and warm all year round.
How Hot Will Your Pool Get?
In my experience a pool will get around 10 degrees hotter with a good solar blanket, however, I’ve seen pools get much hotter, it just depends on average temperatures during the night and the day and how much direct sunlight your pool gets.
Why Warranty Matters With Pool Blankets
Even the best pool blankets will come under some wear and tear over a few seasons and that’s why all of the products above come with a good warranty.
It’s another reason why I love promoting Amazon’s products if your cover gets a tear, starts wasting away or becomes damaged, you can go to your Amazon account, tell them whats going on and they will work on getting you a new one sent over.
It’s that simple.
So, always try to get a cover with a good warranty and remember if it breaks don’t be scared to use it.
How Long Do Solar Covers Last?
A good solar cover can last anywhere from 1 all the way to 8 years, depending on quality, climate and how you treat it.
If you get the Sun2Solar blanket, then the 6-year warranty keeps you covered for 6 solid years, on top of that I’ve known many people to have had that solar cover for well over 3 years.
One big factor in how long the solar cover will last is maintenance, you must store the cover out of the sun while using the pool, leaving it bunched up on the side of the pool will cause the bubbles to get burnt by the sun and increase the chance of damage.
Fold it away, out of the sun, each time you use the pool and you’ll notice your cover last a longer time.
However, don’t be worried if you see a little wear in the first year as that’s perfectly normal.
How Do I Shape A Solar Cover?
Buy a cover big enough for the widest points of your pool, then lay it inside the pool and start trimming the edges to match the shape of your pool with a pair of sharp scissors.
Most of the covers on this list allow you to trim the unit without voiding the warranty.
