I’m not a girly girl, but I do love Valentine’s Day. I like keeping things bold and modern instead of fuffy and pink. Red, black and white and hearts. Can’t go wrong with that.

Between M’s crazy work schedule, and me being sick, we really didn’t plan anything for our anniversary (which was the 10th) or Valentine’s Day. Now that we’re engaged it doesn’t seem as important to me as it once did. I used to plan for weeks ahead of time, buying M the perfect token of my affection, and picking somewhere special for dinner. Now the attention is on our big day only 6 months away and our new anniversary that we’ll be celebrating from now on. Of course we wished each other “happy 4 years!” last Sunday, but I didn’t even think about cooking something special or buying him a card.

Tomorrow we’re going to a tasting with our caterer for the wedding. That’s really exciting and special, so I’m glad it happened to fall on Valentine’s Day. But other than that we have no plans… Maybe we’ll go see Les Miserables finally, or maybe we’ll stay in. Even so, I’ve obviously thought about what I’ll wear…

I picked up this polka dot sweater at Target the other day. Pair that with some hot red crop pants and some sexy black pumps… Yowza! Happy Valentine’s Day indeed!

Growing up in Southern California, I’ve been around cactus and succulents my whole life. My dad had a cactus garden when I was little, and now their going to rip out all the grass in the front lawn and xeriscape it with California native plants. It’s serious people. So it’s no wonder that when the succulent wedding trend came around, I wanted to be part of it.

I’m a “no-frills” type of girl. I’ve always known I wasn’t going to get married in a church, or in a big bedazzled ball gown. It’s just not my style, and thankfully, it’s not M’s either. We’re down to earth people, and we want our big day to reflect that.

Our contemporary Southern California wedding is going to feature lots of succulents and big bright blooms, natural textures like wood and brick, and sparkly gold accents all on a warm summer’s night. You know, something like this:

Sparkly gold headband instead of a veil, don’t you think? // I love the cascading succulents on this cake // Soft LA skyline in the background // Love the vertical garden for the ceremony // Bright pink blooms for the bouquet, with the succulents of course // Long table centerpieces for long wooden tables // Absolutely adore this dress for my bridesmaids // Great typography, bold graphics and bright colors for all the paper goods // Love this casual look for the guys // Easy tera cotta DIY idea

I’m leaving for Salt Lake City next Tuesday! I can’t believe Alt Summit is already here. When planning for a conference like this, I always take time to consider the most important things that will be traveling around with me from panel to lunch to keynote, to after party. The contents of my bag need to be light weight, functional, and look snazzy. That’s a lot to ask for. Here’s how I’m breaking it down:

Tote // No flimsy canvas bag this time. Bring in the big guns and go for durable. You’re going to be living out of this sucker for 8+ hours a day. But make sure it’s as chic as you are.

Nail Color // No manicure lasts forever. Bring a bottle along for those last minute touch ups. It’s so small and won’t add any weight to your bag.

Hand Creme // Back and forth to the bathroom can do a number on your hands. You’ll be meeting lots of people and exchanging handshakes. Make sure yours is pleasantly soft.

Balm // The air is super day in Utah, not to mention being stuck in a hotel all day. Get that smile ready with a moisturizing balm.

Refillable Water Bottle // Probably one of the most over looked accessories is your water bottle. You need to stay hydrated through those panels and running back and forth to the drinking fountain isn’t going to cut it. Make sure you choose a glass bottle for the planet’s sake.

Bobbies // Keep fly-aways at bay, and change up your look with these little guys. They take no room and can add so much.

Notebook & Pens // Obvious? Yes. But make sure you’ve got enough pages in your notebook, or maybe start a new one just for the conference. Oh and always have a back up pen or pencil just in case you run out of ink, break your lead, or meet a friend who needs one.

Business Card Keeper // So important. You’re going to be exchanging cards with everyone and their mother. Keep them organized or else you’ll end up with cards in every pocket you own.

iPad // Last year I brought a laptop to Alt. It was definitely useful, but oh so heavy. This year I’ll be bringing my iPad. Now, I’m not a huge tablet fan, but I do think this is the perfect place to use it. If you don’t have one, I would just stick to your smart phone and a notebook.

Smart phone // Again, this goes without saying. Tweet, post, email, share, and Instagram your heart out. Embrace technology and watch it take you to new heights.

We’re having our engagement photos taken next Monday (can you believe it?) by our dear friends Lukas & Suzy VanDyke. I designed their logo last year, so instead of paying me in money, they are paying me in photos! Isn’t it awesome to have talented friends?

I’ve started to pull a couple outfits together for the photo shoot  I wanted one to be a more “everyday” look, and one to feel a bit more special. We’re doing 3 locations—our home, a favorite restaurant, and CSUN, the college where we met. Overall I want the outfits to feel like me, but me on a good day. I’m getting my hair trimmed and my nails done on Saturday, and I’ve told M to make sure his favorite shirt is washed.

As I was doing this, I thought of 5 tips for engagement shoots:

1. Less is more. I tend to go overboard with the accessories when I want to look nice. Keeping it simple makes the photo about you, not about your jewelry, or that hot pink jacket. Layer neutrals with one bold color to keep the photos from being too busy.

2. Underthings. As you can see from the collages above, I plan on keeping my navy tights on the whole time. I’ll be changing my dress at home or a restaurant bathroom, but I don’t want to take too long. Keeping your underthings (including bra straps!) the same for each outfit will keep the photo shoot moving, and also lessen the amount of stuff you’re taking along with you.

3. Details. Get your hair cut, your eyebrows waxed, and your nails done a day or two ahead of time so you don’t have to worry about looking your best. If you have time to bleach your teeth, that wouldn’t hurt either.

4. Layer. Bring a sweater, a jacket, a scarf, even a hat. You never know if you’ll feel cold, or hot. Taking off or putting on a layer is an easy way to change your look without changing your entire outfit.

5. Be yourself. Have fun. The point of this photo shoot is to capture you and your love. Once your photographer shows up, hand over the reins and be flexible. The photographer will make sure you look your best, so smile, laugh and don’t worry about the camera.

I can’t wait to show you all how they turn out!

Wedding Wednesday is a series started by Lovely Struck.

This is our final Gift Guide for the season!  A big huge THANK YOU to the girls over at This is Our Jam for this great collaboration. It’s been so fun doing your virtual shopping. But Hanukah is over, and Christmas is right around the corner, so go snap up those gifts!

Now! 486? (or whatever number they’re on these days…) — Let’s be real. This album is just an excuse to dance around to “Gangnam Style” with the little ones in your family and hope that they’ll turn out to be the next Sophia Grace and Rosie.

I love shopping for kids. It takes me back to the time of the Toys R Us Holiday catalog where I literally just circled everything. Be the best Santa this year and win them over with these adorable Dolly shoes, super cute scarf and elephant chair! I want it all for myself…

Michael Kiwanuka, Home Again  Whether your grandparents are lovers of James Taylor or Otis Redding, this beautiful album is the perfect complement to their collection.

Grandparents are super special people. There’s no one who will love you more, forgive your faults, and slip you a $20 every single time they see you. Personalize your gift with a lovely photo book from Blurb, or give them some high quality home goods from Woolrich or Pendelton.

Two Door Cinema Club, Beacon — These British indie rockers killed it with their sophomore album this year. Gift this CD to your man, who will most definitely enjoy the electro-pop jams reminiscent of Foster the People, Vampire Weekend, and all his other faves (and enjoy dancing along to the album with him, of course!).

You may fight, but you know he’ll always be there for you, and life would be a lot lonelier without him in it. Tis the season to show him how much you care, so get him this timeless Nixon watch, and these amazing suede boots. Remind him of your relationship with this awesome ampersand marquee light.

The Lumineers was by far one of our favorite albums of the year. You may already know “Ho Hey” (and consequently sing “I belong with you/you belong with me/you’re my sweetheart” to your girl all the time), and we promise the rest of the album is equally as wonderful.

Give your best girl something as glittering as her personality, like this shiny Marie Turnor snak, or that gold feather tray. She’s luminescent and irreplaceable, and this simple cube ring is the perfect amount of classy and sparkle.

This album is quite possibly the coolest one we’ve come across this year. For some extra street cred, mention that An Awesome Wave won the coveted British Mercury Prize this year.

If your brother is anything like mine, he needs a little help in the wardrobe department. It always warms my heart a little when I see him wearing clothes I bought for him years afterwards. So come holiday time, I know it’s my job to make sure he looks cool. I picked out big boy leather wallet and some shades that didn’t come from a gas staiton for my bro, topping it all off with a furry hat I know appeals to his inner-child.

Whether your sister is older or younger, we guarantee that she will love this album from Walk the Moon. It’s packed with energy and is the perfect excuse to dance around and relive your childhood together (check out their music video for “Anna Sun” for inspiration).

Sisters are probably the easiest people to shop for. Just get something you love. By now she already understands that her closet is your closet anyway. This cozy mustard scarf is the perfect winter accessory, and that Harvest Moon necklace is out of this world. Give her something that’s all her own too, like this Change is Good tray for her loose change.
