Moving into a new home, a dorm room, a student flat or even just somewhere unfamiliar can feel awful. Yes, you are now an independent adult but being cold, bored of your decor and feeling completely unhomely is something a lot of us go through.
I love buying home decor but also love little DIY’s that I can do right now and that’s what this is going to be about. Things you can do that are either free or really inexpensive to make wherever you are currently living more like home.
1. Buy candles.
It might seem pointless but there are so many scents out there that can make you instantly smile if you’re having a bad day. Smells like: freshly baked bread, coffee, cinnamon, vanilla cupcakes and relaxing smells such as lavender will really help your room feel more homely. It converts the atmosphere and they smell great.
2. Focus on one room at a time.
If you’re going to be spending a lot of time in your bedroom, focus on that bit first. Invest in some cute bedding and nice cushions and enjoy coming home to them every day. Bedding doesn’t have to be expensive, you can look online for places like Amazon to find some mega deals. I love this cute pineapple bedding for just over 50 bucks.
3. Transform with fairy lights.
Fairy lights are one of the cheapest things you can buy to make your home feel cozier. Lay them around your headboard, around a mirror or just near your TV for ultimate comfort.
4. Go nuts with photos.
If you have any old photos hanging around or even if you have access to an old photo album, try sticking some pictures to your fridge or around your room. It will remind you of the people you love and help you feel closer to them.
5. Cute slippers and blankets.
If it’s cool enough, purchase some cute slippers and a cute blanket. Cosy up with it on cold nights and pop your slippers on every morning, if you’re at work or school you will be reminded of the lovely comfort that reminds you of going home.
6. Shower and Curtain Rail.
This one may sound dumb but if you have your own shower and a curtain rail, consider picking up a cheap new bright one online. When I first moved into my place I changed the drab white curtain for a bright pink chequered curtain and it instantly lifted the bathroom and made me smile every time I walked in.
7. Get yourself an awesome mug.
If you’re a tea/coffee drinker, make sure you have a favorite mug or bring your favorite mug from home. Nothing says homely more than curling up on the sofa with a cup of tea, a blanket and a binge watch of your favorite show on Netflix.
8. Gardening goes a long way.
Buy an inexpensive plant from a garden center and watch it grow. These aren’t expensive at all, just make sure you water it and look after it and watch as it converts your living space.
